Lifeless
Cyclones Torched By Blaze
July 29, 2013 -
In what is likely to be the final game #34 played as a
Cyclone, He saved his worst for last. #34 allowed a career
worst 11 runs (5 earned) in 3 innings as the Bayou Blaze doubled
up the Cyclones 14-7. The lone bright spots for the Cyclones
were Gabe Medina smacking 2 2-Run HR and Ryan Phillips who
doubled and tripled ahead of both of Gabe's homers.
Patchwork
Cyclones Team No Match For Sharks
July 21, 2013 -
Shannon Morgan and Ryan Phillips were the only bright spots in a
game featuring broken glasses and bloodied noses. The offense
figured out a way to score 6 runs, but it wasn't enough as the
Sharks sank the Cyclones 11-6.
Cyclones Split
Double Header, Likely To Miss Playoffs
July 15, 2013 -
Despite the continuous porous defense of the Cyclones, the team
was able to overcome and defeat the upstart Sky Sox 13-6 in the
first game of a split-double header. Starter Dean Cosme got the
win, which was his first consecutive wins since May 2012. Ryan
Harris sparked the offense with 2 hits (1 double), 2 runs scored
and 3 RBI.
On the back end of the double
header, #34's streak of allowing 3 or less earned runs
during a start came to an end as #34 was decked for 6 runs (5
earned) in 7 innings of work against the Montgomery Biscuits.
#34 had not allowed more than 3 runs in a game since Aug 21,
2011. Needless to say, with no offense to speak of, Cyclones
were shut out for the third time this season, the first time in
team history that has happened.
Cyclones
Scorch Heat 16-1
July 8, 2013 -
Mike MacLaughlin made his much anticipated debut as a starter
for the Cyclones and held the Texas heat to 1 unearned run while
allowing only 3 hits over 3 2/3 innings. It was in the 4th
inning where Mike ran into some trouble as the gas tank quickly
began to empty. While he gave up only 1 hit in the inning, Mike
walked the bases loaded and came out of the game with 2 outs and
no room for error for reliever Dean Cosme. Cosme quickly
induced an inning ending ground ball and the threat was over.
Meanwhile on offense, the
Cyclones took full advantage of wild pitching and defensive
miscues. The Cyclones, led by #34 (1-2, 1 2B, 1 R, 4 RBI,
2 BB, 1 SB, 1 HBP) and Gabe Medina (2-4, 1 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) got
the first inning started with a bang as they plated 4 runs
including a 2 run scoring double from Gabe Medina and an RBI
single by Travis Woodruff.
After opening up the lead to
10-1, the Cyclones capped off the game with a 6 run 6th inning
led by #34's bases clearing double.
Cyclones Rout Blue Beavers 13-2, Back To .500
June 24,
2013 - Playing their
fist game in a month, the Cyclones took on the Conroe Blue
Beavers in Tomball. Once again the offense started off a little
slow, but as the innings went by, the runs began to come.
#34 started for the Cyclones and was his usual dominant self.
#34 ran into a little bit of trouble in the 4th inning after a
leadoff error gave the Beavers a base runner. After a
strikeout, the Beavers put together consecutive hits including a
misjudged fly ball by the left fielder that allowed the Beavers
to score an unearned run.
After 5
innings, #34 gave way to Mike MacLaughlin who allowed only an
unearned run over his one inning of work. Offensively, the
Cyclones didn't do a lot, but they didn't have to.
Collectively, the Cyclones walked 11 times, were hit by pitches
twice and collected 8 hits including a 2 run double by newcomer
Shannon Morgan and a bombastic solo home run by #34.
Team Struggles Continue, Fall To Zephyrs 13-0
May 20,
2013 - In a rematch of
the season opener, the Spring Cyclones took on the Spring-Klein
Zephyrs and this time it wasn't even close. The Cyclones
struggled in all aspects of the game. Dean Cosme started on the
mound for the Cyclones and got rocked for 8 runs (6 earned).
With the offense struggling to score runs against solid
pitching, it became evident right away that the team was going
to have a long afternoon if it was going to make a comeback in
the game.
Mike
MacLaughlin relieved Cosme in the 4th inning and allowed 5 runs
(all earned) over 2 innings of work. #34 came on in the
6th to finish off the game with 2 scoreless innings.
#34, Keith Combine For First No-Hitter In Club
History
May 6,
2013 - It was a historic
day for the Cyclones as starting pitcher #34 and reliever
Justin Keith combined to throw the team's first no-hitter, a
23-0 pounding of the Conroe Blue Beavers. Coming off a
demoralizing shutout loss to the Biscuits in the first half of a
double header, the Cyclones faced a tired and depleted Blue
Beavers team also coming off a game 1 double header loss. And
they made the Beavers pay.
The Cyclones opened up the
scoring on the Beavers in the first inning by plating 5 runs
which was all #34 was going to need to keep the Beavers at
bay. #34 threw an effective 5 innings before handing the ball
over to Justin Keith to finish out the final few innings. Keith
was equally as effective.
Offensively,
the Cyclones took advantage of the Beavers weak defense and
slugged their way to 23 on 16 hits. 9 errors by the Beavers
didn't help matters much and it all helped seal the deal for the
teams first no-hitter. Brandon Thomas and Ryan Phillips were
the offensive stars as they went 4-for-5 and 2-for-4
respectively and drove in a combined 8 runs, while scoring a
combined 6 runs.
Cyclones Blanked For Only 2nd Time In Club
History
May 6,
2013 - With the wind
swirling around the field, they knew it was going to be a rough
day. But no one knew it would be this rough. It all started
out ok. Starting pitcher Dean Cosme gave up a run in the top
half of the first, which didn't seem that bad considering how
the inning went. But then the Cyclones got off to a good start
with a walk to leadoff hitter Justin Keith. Then he promptly
got picked off. And then a walk to #34. It was going to
be one of those games. But alas, it turned out to be the
opposite. It was one of those games that the Cyclones don't
experience very often - a shutout.
The offense
got nothing going against the Montgomery Biscuits as they
started a hard throwing lefty who benefited greatly from a
generously low strike zone, but even knowing that the Cyclones
were not able to mount any offense what so ever.
On the other
side of the ball, the Cyclones defense wasn't much help either.
Cosme couldn't locate his pitches in the lower part of the
strike zone as effectively as the Biscuits. Add to that the
some errors and unearned runs and you have a recipe for a loss.
Newcomer Mike MacLaughlin came in to relieve Cosme, but he
suffered a similar fate as well.
Medina, Thomas Lead Cyclones Past Zephyrs
Apr 22,
2013 - Travis Woodruff
led off the 4th inning getting hit by a pitch. One wild pitch
and single later, it's first and third and no one out. And
almost as if was planned, Gabe Medina, who had previously
singled, broke for second on the pitch, which Brandon Thomas
promptly grounded through the vacated shortstop position for an
RBI single and gave the Cyclones their first run of the day.
Another wild pitch and another run as Medina came across to
score on the innings second wild pitch. Another wild pitch
moved Brandon over to third where Buddy Cochran drove him in
with a groundout to short.
The Cyclones
would add another run in the 7th to make it 4-1 and that was the
final score as the Cyclones topped the Zephyrs. Cyclones
pitching led by #34 held the Zephyrs to 1 run on 3 hits
over 8 innings.
Spring 2013 Begins Today
Apr 21,
2013 - It all begins
today as the Spring Cyclones head to the Cy-Fair Sports Complex
in Cypress to face the Spring-Klein Zephyrs at 4pm. The roster
has been reworked as some past veterans have returned and some
new faces will grace the field all in all to help the Cyclones
win another championship. Let's see what happens this summer.
Cyclones Begin Preparations For Spring 2013
Mar 18,
2013 - The NHWBL held
their bi-annual draft yesterday and it was a record turnout.
Over 25 players showed up to show what they had and I would have
to say most all who showed up got placed on a team. One person
in particular who came out was Jeff Rickard, whom the Cyclones
drafted in the first round. Jeff
is a veteran catcher who carries with him a big stick as well.
Also coming
aboard the Cyclones bandwagon is Mike MacLaughlin. Mike is a
left handed starting pitcher who is working his way back onto
the field after a brief layover in life.
Also finding
their way back to the fold are Marc Love and Buddy Cochran.
Both were members of the Spring 2012 roster that defeated the
Bayou Blaze to capture the NHWBL Spring 2012 Championship. The
Cyclones are looking to the entire roster to make significant
contributions to the team en route to another Championship
effort. Welcome aboard gentlemen!!!
