Red Sox Double Up Cyclones 8-4, End Playoff Run

Nov 5, 2017 -  The Red Sox struck early against the Cyclones capitalizing on an initially shorthanded Cyclones team. The Cyclones would get to 9 players but by that time it was already too late.  The damage had been done and the Cyclones would never recover.  Although they had their chances, solid pitching and good defense insured the Red Sox would secure their victory over the Cyclones.

Errors Doom Cyclones, Hurta; Yankees Blank Cyclones 4-0

Oct 30, 2017 -  An error on the first play of the game set the tone for the Spring Cyclones as that run came around to score on a straight steal of home to put the Yankees up 1-0 after an inning of play. The score remained 1-0 after 5 as the Cyclones could not capitalize on several chances with runners on base to plate any runs.  In the 6th inning the Yankees once again would score an unearned run to go ahead 2-0.  Once again, the Cyclones would have a chance to score but could not string together enough hits to score any runs. The Yankees would go on to score a couple of more runs at the end of the game as time expired to finish the game 4-0.

Ed Hurta pitched a great game as he kept the Yankees at bay with 9 strikeouts while only allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.  Unfortunately, errors allowed 4 of those 5 baserunners to score.  It was not a fate deserved.

Medina Smacks 2-Run HR in 10th As Cyclones Walkoff Toros

Oct 26, 2017 -  Every kid dreams of hitting a game wining bottom of the ninth grand slam to win the World Series.  In fairness to all of us grown up still playing a kids game, the dream never dies, but the reality is definitely a little altered.  Nowadays, we continue to have those game winning dreams, however, they are in Men's leagues.  But the joy and jubilation remains the same

For one person this week, that feeling, that dream came true. As the Cyclones and Toros battled back and forth with the game being tied or changing leads 7 times, the game went into extra innings when the Cyclones tied the game at 10 in the bottom of the 7th without the benefit of a hit, which is something the Cyclones seem to have perfected over the years. After 2 more scoreless innings, John Richardson led off the bottom of the 10th with a bloop single.  After 2 outs, Gabe Medina stepped up to the plate.  A couple of pitches later, Gabe smacked the ball down the left field line just inside the left field foul pole for a 2-Run Game Winning Walkoff HR to send the Cyclones to the next round of the playoffs. For us weekend warriors, its a dream come true.

Hurta Fans 12 As Cyclones Double Up Legends

Oct 19, 2017 -  An otherwise meaningless game in terms of playoff standings, the Cyclones defeated the Spring Legends 4-2 behind the strong pitching of Ed Hurta who hurled 6 strong innings allowing only 2 runs while striking out 12.  Andy Perez saved the game out with a scoreless final inning.

Cyclones Outslug Marauders, Win 13-10

Oct 16, 2017 -  Making his 4th start in 14 days, starting pitcher Dean Cosme just didn't have it and did not pitch well by any means. Cosme allowed 9 runs in 4 plus innings and did not appear sharp whatsoever.  However, his bat this game made up for his pitching shortcomings as he went 1-3 while driving in 4 runs with at least 1 RBI in each at bat.  But the players of the game were Joselito Paniagua and Dave McBride as Joselito went 2-2 w/ 4 runs scored, 2 walks and an RBI, while Dave went 3-3 w 3 runs scored, 1 walk and drove in 2.  In fact this was a virtual team effort as 8 out of 9 players reach base safely and 7 out of 9 scoring at least 1 run.

Cyclones Walk Off Diablos 10-9 As Time Expires

Oct 9, 2017 -  He wasn't supposed to make the game but in the end, he came and his presence was felt all throughout the game.  Alex Collazo will the Cyclones to victory on Sunday.  His line says he had 1 hit in 3 AB with 3 stolen bases.  But there was something else.  Due to injuries to Ray Mariano, Andy Perez and Delvin Hudson, Alex ended up being a courtesy runner throughout most of the game, not as a specific one, but out of timing and where he was batting in the lineup. It was those 3 stolen bases that made a huge difference in the game.

With the Cyclones down 9-7 in the bottom of the last inning, Ray Mariano smacked a leadoff hit to begin the inning.  Alex then came in as a courtesy runner and promptly stole 2nd and 3rd to put himself in scoring position.  Gabe Medina then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Alex (Ray) to get the Cyclones within 1 run.  It was here where things turned strange.  With time running out, 2 outs already down, Mgr Dean Cosme had to make a decision whether or not to force his batter to make an out so that they could extend the game another inning or let it go and roll the dice with no one on and 2 out to try and get the winning run on and in.

Dean let the inning continue.  As it did, the Diablos conspicuously walked the next 3 batters, whether on purpose or unintentional, the bases were now loaded for Cosme. After getting behind 1-2, Cosme roped a soft liner over the head of the Diablos shortstop to drive in the tying and winning runs to walk off the Diablos.

Late Rally Boosts Cyclones Over Marauders 9-8

Oct 5, 2017 -  Mgr Dean Cosme was forced to pitch on short notice when his other starting pitchers were injured in the last few days.  Pitching on 2 days rest, Cosme wasn't as sharp as in his previous start, but nonetheless he persevered. This time however, it was his bat that made the most difference in the game as he as 2 RBI single in the first inning to help the Cyclones go up on the Marauders 4-0.  He then bookended that hit with an RBI bloop to right that scored the eventual wining run in the 7th.He closed the door on the Marauders in the bottom of the 7th to secure the victory.

Medina, Cosme Help Halt Skid, Cyclones Def. Astros 7-1

Oct 2, 2017 -  Mgr Dean Cosme didn't have many options.  No back up pitching.  No back up catcher.  A first baseman playing out of position due to a hamstring pull.  A second baseman with a sore quad and an outfielder recovering from his own quad injury.  Just another Sunday for Cosme and the Cyclones. Knowing he had to go the distance,

Cosme braved the midday Houston humidity and delivered a strong performance allowing only 1 unearned run over 8 innings while allowing only 6 hits and no walks.

On the offensive side of the ball, catcher Gabe Medina continued his resurgence going 3-3 including a HR, 2 runs and 4 RBI and adding a base on balls to boot.

Cyclones Lose 3 Games In 6 Day Span

Sept 30, 2017 -  The Spring Cyclones were trounced by the Houston Red Sox 14-5, were walked off by the Houston Colt 45's after having a 5-1 lead to gift them their first win of the season 6-5 and two days later were walked off by the Yankees 9-8 after having a 7-0 lead.  # ugly losses in 6 days to fall 1 game below .500 for the first time in 3 seasons.

Perez, Cyclones Blank Panthers 6-0

Sept 18, 2017 -  Andy Perez returned to the Cyclones for the Fall season after a 1 season layoff.  It's as if he never missed a beat.  His first start since returning couldn't have been scripted any better.  Andy tossed 7 shutout innings before handing the game over to Ed Hurta who finished out the 6-0 shutout and secured the Cyclones victory over the Panthers. Hurta also contributed a double and a homer in the victory.

With No Offense, Cyclones Fall To Thunder 4-1

Sept 14, 2017 -  An RBI single by Gabe Medina accounted for their only run as the Cyclones weren't able to muster up any offense against the Texas Thunder.  Ed Hurta pitched well enough to win but came up on the short end of the stick

Cyclones Take Advantage Of Generals Mistakes, Win 14-6

Sept 11, 2017 -  With the bases loaded, the Cyclones hit into what appeared to be an inning ending flyball to left field.  The left fielder dropped the ball and 3 runs scored. Now alone, this is something that has happened before, just not in the favor of the Cyclones.  But the strangest thing about this is that it not only happened once, but TWICE in the same game!!!  The Cyclones scored 6 runs due to dropped flyballs with the bases loaded and 2 outs. The other strange thing about this is that it happened to one of the premier teams in the league.  Needless to say, that gift will probably not happen again for quote a long time.

Amid Harvey Aftermath, Cyclones Blow Past Toros 14-7

Sept 6, 2017 -  After a false start in August, the Fall 2017 Season of the Houston Hardball League got underway last night with the Spring Cyclones facing the Houston Toros (formerly the Houston Twins) at Schwartz Park.  Once again, Ed "Da Big Hurt" Hurta was on the mound for the Cyclones and picked up right where he left off, pitching 5 strong innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 3 hits, striking out 7, while walking 3.  He also kept up the pace at the plate, going 1-3, scoring once, driving in 4 and walking once.

10 players have been with the team for at least 1 year, 3 others are coming back for their 2nd season and 1 new player is a veteran from the North Houston Wood Bat League. The team's chemistry is at an all time high and it shows on the field and at the plate.
