AMBUSHED!
New season brings sad realization

Pete Ulloa looks on during game vs. Rockies Sept 5, 2019

Sept 6, 2019 - The Spring Cyclones weren't' expecting what happened last night.  Although the expectations weren't high, the scene that unfolded was worse than imagined. With the pitching core left bare, Mgr Dean Cosme sent starter Andrew Picos to the mound to begin the new season.  What he was met with was an all out ambush of hitting.  After all was said and done, Andrew left after 2 innings and it didn't get any better from there.  Cosme came in to relieve and was met with more of the same.  Even as the Cyclones tried to battle back into the game, the run disparity was too large and the Cyclones fell 12-5.

TOP 10 MOMENT #8
Fall 2016 Postseason was one for the ages!

Several players look on during game vs Marauders - Oct 30,2016

It didn't end quite the way the Cyclones had hoped for, but it completed one of the greatest collection of baseball that the Spring Cyclones had ever competed in up to this point in their illustrious history. The Fall 2016 Season was by all accounts one of the Cyclones best seasons.  They finished with a 10-4-1 record, winning 10 regular season games for the first time in their history. This season came after the Cyclones had 5 consecutive losing seasons for the first time. It was a season that brought promise of continued success as the team said goodbye to several players that the team no longer deemed a part of its future as well as keeping together the core that had been with the team for a couple of years at that point.

But what would follow this successful season was a postseason that will go down in the history books of the Houston Hardball League as the stuff of legend. The Fall 2016 postseason began with a home game against the Houston Yankees, a team the Cyclones had lost to earlier in the season.  Mgr Dean Cosme took the mound that day and held the Yankees to 2 runs, while scattering 10 hits in a 7 inning complete game 7-2 victory. Dean had one of his best pitching seasons that Fall, as he went 3-0 in the regular season to the tune of a 2.95 ERA over 21 1/3 innings.  This game continued that fortune.

However, the good vibes would come crashing down just a few days later when the Cyclones met up with the Generals.  The Cyclones could not find an answer for the Generals as they defeated the Cyclones 9-4 to send the Cyclones to the losers bracket of the Fall 2016 Postseason tournament.  Starter Ed Hurta was able to contain the Generals and keep the game at 4-2 but Ed tired and Dean came on in relief but quickly gave up additional runs that would seal the deal for the Generals.

The next game was an elimination game as both the Cyclones and Colt 45's were meeting in the loser's bracket.  Winner moves on.  Loser goes home.  For much of the night, things did not go the way of the Cyclones.  The Cyclones defense betrayed Cosme as he watched his team's chances at a championship go up in smoke. But it didn't end the way it appeared it would.  Heading into the bottom of the 8th and final inning, the Cyclones who were the home team by virtue of record, were down 8-4.They would leave with a 9-8 win and live another day. The heroes of the game were familiar faces.  Mark McDowell, in his 4th season with the team, scored the tying run on a soft single to right by Dean Cosme. Dean then scored the winning run on a single by long time Cyclone Jorge Atencio.

That victory set up a colossal showdown with the powerhouse Texas Thunder.  Having already lost twice to the Thunder during the season, the Cyclones knew this was their chance to exalt revenge. The one man show known as Ed Hurta took center stage as he delivered a dominant performance on the mound, holding the Thunder to 3 runs, while striking out 14 batters.  On the other side of the ball, Ed had 3 RBI to cap a 3-5 day. Jorge Atencio once again sealed the deal with an RBI double for his 3rd hit of the night as well.

Which leads us to the Semi- Final game vs. the Generals the next night.  Dean Cosme took the mound for the Cyclones. Although the final numbers don't reflect a well pitched game, the Cyclones defense once again proved questionable as Dean allowed 6 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits. But nonetheless, the Cyclones would rally and tie the game at 6, taking Dean off the hook.  The Cyclones turned to Ed Hurta, who the night prior had given an eight inning 14 strikeout performance to hold the tie while the Cyclones figured out a way to score. And score they did in the 6th inning as they went up 7-6.  But the Generals would rally and tie the game in the 8th inning.  The score remained tied heading into the bottom of the 10th inning.  The Cyclones had plenty of chance each of the last 3 innings but would come up empty each time. But in the 10th inning, Ed would run into trouble as he began to tire. Ed would load the bases with less than 2 out.  It would take a miracle to come out of the inning unscathed.  Ed got to 2 outs. And then Ed got the fly ball he needed to escape.  But it was a shallow fly ball.  One that began to drop fast.  Joselito Paniagua dove!  Joselito catches the ball!!!  But the ball came loose as Joselito hit the ground.  And the 4-1/2 hour epic was over.  The Generals defeated the Cyclones in one of the most epic games ever played in the Houston Hardball League.

Cosme Earns Emotional Win

Johnny Gonzalez smacks an Inside The Park 2 Run HR vs Marauders - Oct 30,2016

As the year long celebration continues for the Cyclones 10th anniversary, the #9 Top Cyclones Moment came Oct 30, 2016.  Having lost his grandmother earlier in the year, Mgr. Dean Cosme lost his uncle just a few days before taking the mound against the Marauders at Lamar High School.  Dedicating the game to his uncle and grandmother, Cosme stifled the Marauders allowing only 1 run over 9 innings, pitching probably his finest performance since moving to Texas.

Cosme scattered 7 hits over 9 innings, while striking out 3, walking 1 and hitting 1 batter.  The biggest trouble Cosme would get in would be in the 8th inning when he loaded the bases.  He induced 2 fly ball outs to get out of trouble and finished off the 9th to complete the emotional win.

In the meantime, the Cyclones scored 7 runs that day fueled by Johnny Gonzalez' 2 run Inside-The-Park HR.  Stay tuned for Top Moment #8!
