MIAMI-DADE METS HALL OF FAME

It is with great honor and respect that the Miami-Dade Mets announce the inaugural class of the Miami-Dade Mets Hall of Fame. The players were chosen on a number of factors including statistics, longevity and most of all, impact on the Miami-Dade Mets, its franchise and its history.  The inaugural class is made up of three distinctly different individuals, but at the same time, three individuals with one similar passion, baseball.

Dean Cosme - Owner/GM/Manager/Player
Dean Cosme began his SFBL career in the Summer 1992 season (the inaugural season of the SFBL) at the request of his friend, original Miami Mets Manager Rick Martinez. Cosme played three seasons with the Miami Mets before the SFBL expanded into the MABL and MSBL divisions. By that time, Martinez had left the league to an injury and the Miami Mets essentially morphed in the the Miami Giants of the MSBL Division. That left Cosme, who was not eligible for the MSBL Division to look for a new team. Enter the Miami Twins.

In the Winter 1994 Season, Cosme joined the Miami Twins for 3 seasons. When it became obvious that the Twins were about to fold, Cosme stepped up and took over for what would become a 22 Season/11 Year reign as GM/Manager/Player for the Miami Twins, Miami Mets, Kendall Mets & Miami-Dade Mets. In that time, Cosme made seven playoff appearances, reached to the finals twice, finally winning a Championship in Spring 2003. Cosme retired from the SFBL in 2007 after 14 years and 28 seasons.  With his retirement came the end of the Miami-Dade Mets as a team in the SFBL, but the legacy lives on to this day.

Rolando Gonzalez - Centerfield
Rolando Gonzalez was a fourth round draft pick for the Miami Twins in the Fall 1995 Free Agent Draft. Although he was picked in the fourth round, he was actually on most people's board as a first rounder. He dropped to the fourth round because he was a package that came along with 3 other players. Most teams did not have a need for 4 players let alone 5 which is what Roly ultimately brought with him. That was good enough for Manager Dean Cosme who needed players to fill his roster.

From the beginning of the Fall 1995 season, it was evident that Roly was not your typical player. Roly was the league's legitimate 5 tool player. Playing centerfield, Roly could hit, hit for power, run and steal bases stealer and his speed was a major asset to his defense which was far superior to most. He also had a canon for an arm that was not only fast but accurate as well.

Rolando had a passion for the game that most people wished they could have. He was a winner and he wanted to win. His passion rubbed off on most of his teammates and it made them better. Even in the Fall 1996 season in which he was not playing as well as he was accustomed to, his passion for the game elevated his teammates to new levels. His leadership commanded respect and he willed his team to the SFBL Fall 1996 MABL Championship Game. The Miami Mets ultimately fell short of the championship.

Roly's rookie season stunned the SFBL and made everyone take notice of the Miami Twins. Roly led the league in 5 offensive categories, a feat that would not be duplicated for another 20 seasons/10 years. Roly went on to take another stolen base title in the Spring 1997 season and a HR title during his time with the Miami Orioles.

Elis Rodriguez - Shortstop/Pitcher
Elis Rodriguez began his tenure with the Miami-Dade Mets in the Fall 2001 Season.  His impact was felt immediately. After 4 seasons of floundering, the Kendall Mets changed their name, changed their attitude and added Elis Rodriguez.  No single player had as much of an impact on a MD Mets team since Rolando Gonzalez 5 years earlier. Elis was the franchises second 5 tool player. He became the next premier shortstop for the franchise in a long list of impressive shortstops that have played for the MD Mets.

Elis woke up a team that had not played good baseball since 5 seasons earlier when the Kendall Mets had the duo of Garciga and Ruiz and finished with an 8-4 record to still miss the playoffs. Elis brought with him confidence. An aura of swagger that had been missing from the team. He also brought with him leadership. He wanted to win. He played hard. He wanted his teammates to play hard and they did. He brought out the best in his teammates.

By the Spring 2003 season, he was one of 4 players that had played for the franchise for more that 2 years. He was an "old" vet on the team, but still the unquestioned leader. He had helped bring players to the team that made a difference. He helped other players reach their potential on the bases. He inspired confidence that this team could win it all.  And in the Spring 2003 season, they did.

During the playoffs, he continued his overall great play and helped lead the team to victory. It would be the franchise's only championship, but what a Championship it was.

He is in the top three in 6 offensive categories and is tied for first for the franchise record in doubles. When it was all said and done, Elis' legacy as a Miami-Dade Met is firmly planted as one of the best.
